Part 1b - Analysing an Existing Graphic Product

Shepard Fairey

Purpose

Shepard Fairey created this poster to promote Obama's presdential campain, which was said to be iconic to Obama's campain, as this stylised portrait came to represent his campain. 

 

Format

The format of the advert was meant to be a poster, then a digital version was put up in Shepard Fairey's wesite. This was also put on leaflets and stickers. 

 

Content

The content of the poster is Barack Obama in a stylised screen print with the word 'hope' at the bottom, where white space would be.The word 'hope' is in a light blue. The word at the bottom was changed from 'progress' to 'hope', then later 'change'. The colours used are light blue, dark blue, red and beige, which was made using screen printing at first and then Shepard Fairey used diffrent printing methods later to distirbute the poster. The colours used are the American flag colours, being red, white and blue. 

 

Style

The style of this poster is a stylised screen print. It could be considered pop art, as of the styling of the poster. The lettering at the bottom of the poster is all in capitals, which could suggest that he is hope that America needs. The style is based on the Russian propaganda in the Second World War, which consists of the use of simple colours, the same printing techniques as the Russian posters were made and the slogan at the bottom of the print.

 

Layout

The layout of this poster consists of a portrait of Obama with the word 'hope' at the bottom of the poster. He has used the white space at the sides of the poster and also at the bottom. He also has his 'sunrise' logo on his left shoulder. The poster was based on a photoograph that freelancer photographer Mannie Garcia. The photo was later found, by Tom Granlish, that it was an Associated Press photograph, which was entitled to copyrights.

 

Target Audience

The target audience of this poster is over 18 years olds as this is part of Obama's presedential campain. This also geared towards people that would vote for Obama or for people that are not sure of who to vote for, as this symbolizes 'hope' for America. 

 

Regulatory Bodies

The regulatory Bodies for this portrait for this poster is the FTC - the Federal Trade Commission. The body declares that the use of 'unfair methods of competition or affecting buying the selling on a massive sale, and unfair or decective acts in or practises in or affecting buying and sales, aer hereby declared unlawful'. 

They have also said that 'there must be a representation, practise and that nothing is left out' , in this case the poster is promoting an unfair advatage to the 2008 elections. There are also Ethical and Legal issues that Shepard had to go with.
