Part 1a - Analysing a Exsiting Graphic Product

Saul Bass

Purpose

Saul Bass designed this poster to promote the 1965 British psychological thriller 'Bunny lake was missing', which starred Laurence Oliver which was produced and directed by Otto Preminger. The thriller was based on the novel which was the same title. The film was filmed in black and white, which is why the poster is in black and white as well.

Format

The format of the advert is a film poster, as this is to promote the film 'bunny lake was missing'.

Content

The content of the film poster is big blocky lettering at the top with a black paper square in the middle with a little girl shape ripped out of the paper. This is to advertise what happened to the little girl, showing that she had been 'torn' out of life. Also, the word 'missing' is gradually fading out. This reinforces the meaing behind the film and also the word 'missing'.  There is red capital letters at the bottom to show who had contributed to making the film. The child is in white,  which could show that the child is innocent.

Style

The style of the film poster is minimalist, with the use of limited colours, primarly using black and white for the whole poster. This could suggest that the film is dark and sinister. Also the film could be between light and dark personalities.

Layout

This film poster layout is simple. The composition of the poster focusses on the 'teared off' child. The block lettering is at the top, while the people who contributed are at the bottm of the poster, in red capital letters.

Target Audience

The target audince could be 18 and older as the poster features a 'missing' child, which is probably not aimed at younger audiences as they may feel uncomfortable with the film. Also, this poster looks quite ominous, making the target audience quite don't understand what the film is about.

Regulatory Bodies

The regulator bodies for this poster are the advertising standards authority. Also , there are Ethical and legal issues that the poster has to deal with. The poster was promoted in the United Kingdom where the poster had to folow the Advertising Authority in the United Kingdom. This poster falls under the catagory of Print Media in the ASA.
